New functions - Top Lists, view users with badge, earned date and more

Image
I've added a couple of new functions to the site. A new link is added to the badge overlay to view all users that got that badge. There is also a new page with Top Lists of badges and users: Top Lists page Note that the headers of the tables are clickable and will sort the content in that column. Badges without country requirement In the country select you can now remove all badges that got a country requirement. Select the last item:  [No country requirement] . Earned date The earned date for all badges are now stored in the database. You must add your badges again to add the earned dates. For repeatable badges the last earned date is stored since the first earned date doesn't exist in the data used. You will currently only see the earned date in the badge list "Users with badge". Users per badge Lists all badges and the number of users that got each badge. Click the badge name and you will see a list of all users. Users with badge View all users that got a specifi

How to get a geo located badge - Single activity. Not triathlon...yet

Image
Update: In January 2021 Garmin made some changes that stopped TCX files from being used for badges and challenges. I've got a report that it works if you convert the file to a FIT file and set a Garmin device as creator. Many of the badges can be awarded by just changing the country and then doing the required activity, distance and time, but there are also a number of location specific badges where that doesn't work like that. The most recent ones are the triathlons in Taiwan. What I've read is that the start and end locations must be at the correct location. So, how can we still get those badges? I managed to get one of the older geo located badges: Gatchina Half Marathon 10K 2019 The description is: Run the Gatchina Half Marathon 10K in Gatchina, Russia, on November 17, 2019. The idea was: Get the course Add timestamps Upload to Garmin Connect I found a course in Garmin Connect:  https://connect.garmin.com/modern/courses Searched for Gatchina and set the distance to 8-1

Tips and Tricks - Pause and Resume later

Image
What you see in this image is when I used a very powerful trick. It is the elevation graph and you see three distinct changes in elevation over time. What caused them? It was when I took a break in a really long and hard bike ride and the air pressure had changed when I continued. The overlay is the speed and you see that after each break my speed goes up. This way my average speed will be very high. Just take a break when the speed goes down. The trick is to take a break and stop the logging and then use the "Resume later" function. Many people use it without even thinking of it if the Auto Pause function is activated. When the speed goes down below a defined threshold the device will automatically stop and when your speed goes up the logging starts again. This can be used in way more extreme ways and here is when it goes into the somewhat gray area of cheating to get badges. It will be up to you how you define it and use this function. Do you think that running 100 miles is

Tips and Tricks - Multisport activities

Image
Garmin has added a number of badges for recording up to 200 activities of the same type, for example walking, yoga, breathwork, treadmill and strength training. For someone like me that usually don't do so much walking since I'm a runner it is hard to log all those walking activities. I would also like to avoid logging silly two minute walks just to get those badges and don't want to flood the news feed in Garmin Connect with all those activities. The trick I'm using to log many walking activities without really doing so much walking is to use the multisport function in the watch. Not all watches support that function. I think that all Forerunners and Fenix watches got it. Check the specifications for your watch. The function is basically that you can switch activity type during an activity and Garmin Connect will hold all those activities together as a single activity. Note that Strava doesn't support multisport activities so if you sync your data to Strava

July 2020 Badge Challenges

Image
The Badge Challenges for July are almost identical to the ones in June. I was hoping for some new stuff and not just a repetition. They switched out the 40 km biking and added two new: 4 hours of biking and 4 hours of walking (none must be done in single activity). Note that you can't join them just yet, but they will for sure be available July 1. July 1-31: Run 100 miles 3-5: Walk 3 miles in a single activity (4.83 km) 6-12: Bike 100 km (62.1 miles) in 7 days 10-12: Run 10 km in a single activity 13-26: Record 150.000 steps in 14 days 24-26: 40 km of cycling in a single activity 25-31: 4 Hours of Cycling 25-31: 4 Hours of Walking Update 2020-07-08 Garmin is slowly rolling out the badges one at a time so you will have to check the challenges page before the starting dates for each challenge to join all challenges. Update 2020-07-28 The 4 hours of cycling and walking are still not live. Maybe Garmin skip those due to the outage. There is als

20 new badges - cycling, treadmill, yoga, breathwork, walking and strength

Image
Garmin just added twenty new badges! All are available in Garmin Connect now. I will not add all images to this post. Just the Zen Master 5 which you will be awarded with after 200 yoga activities. There are two new for indoor cycling probably due to Corona and that they now own Tacx. Bike for 4 hours and do a 50 miles ride on your trainer which is a nice addition to the previous 10 miles, 20 miles and 50 km indoor cycling badges. I also discovered that they fixed the "problem" with that you could get all those indoor cycling badges if you just did a 50 km ride. Now these badges work as they should. The big news is that they added badges for completing an activity a specific number of times. To get the last badge you have to do the activity 100-200 times. There is no time limit so no need to stress. The activity types are: Treadmill, yoga, breathwork, walking and strength training. Here is the full list: Indoor 4-Hour Ride  - Record a 4-hour indoor cycling activity. Indoor 50-

Limited time badges between start and end date are now marked with a green icon

Badges that got a limited time are now marked with a green clock icon if current time is between the start and end date. NOTE! A limitation is that the server time is used for the calculation. The server is using Swedish time zone which currently is Central European Summer Time (UTC+2) and in the winter it is Central European Time (UTC+1). Update 2020-06-01 If the start date is 7 days or less from the current time the clock icon will be orange. I changed the color to green for the badges that are up for grabs. Outdated badges will have the red color. Garmin Badge Database Garmin Connect Change country setting

Badge Challenges, new function and the first 6 badges

Image
I wrote about my ideas for this function for a week ago and I was right. There is a new section in the challenge page for the badge challenges:  https://connect.garmin.com/modern/challenge I can see them in the Connect app under challenges but there are reports about users that don't see them there yet. Maybe the app needs an update. Use the web if you don't see them in the app. Join the challenges you would like to participate in and follow the rules. I don't see why you shouldn't join them all. "Without participation one can never hope to win." The blog post from Garmin: Link The requirements/rules for the challenges are the same as before. Below is what I wrote a week ago. June will be a busy month if you like to get all badges. June 1-30: Run 100 miles - 3.33 miles/day = 5.36 km/day 5-7: Walk 3 miles in a single activity (4.83 km) 8-14: Bike 100 km (62.1 miles) in 7 days 12-14: Run 10 km in a single activity 15-28: Take 150.000 steps in 14 days 19-21: Bike

Floor climbing

Image
Garmin added four badges for the activity type Floor Climbing. Great that Garmin adds badges for more odd activities so we will test other activities than just ordinary running and biking. What is Floor Climbing? The "normal" term is probably Stair climbing:  https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stair_climbing Find a good flight of stairs, preferably a really long one and start climbing. There are 4 different distances or heights in this case since it is the ascent in feet that is counted. 1500, 1000, 735 and 334 feet which is 457, 305, 224 and 102 meters. If you get to the top and still haven't reached 1500 feet then just run down and repeat until you've reached the full ascent. Update 2020-05-22 In Garmin Forums it has beeen reported that you can't get multiple floor climbing badges for the same activity. You must do one activity for each badge. Virtual Climb - The Narrows 2 pts • Record a floor climbing activity with 334 feet of ascent. Vir

June 2020 Challenge Badges - New function in Garmin Connect?

Image
Challenge Badges? Is this a new function from Garmin? Yesterday Garmin published new badge data with some interesting data. The badges are not public yet so we don't now what it really means, but we can always speculate :-) Ordinary badges got two data fields: "title" and "description" These six new badges got two extra fields: "challenge rule description" and "challenge rules summary" Since the description has the text "Join" it might imply that you need to join to be a part of it. Garmin already got the Challenges function so this would fit good in there with the added fields for rules. Since it start in June we will very soon find out. June will be a busy month if you like to get all badges. June 1-30: Run 100 miles - 3.33 miles/day = 5.36 km/day 5-7: Walk 3 miles in a single activity (4.83 km) 8-14: Bike 100 km (62.1 miles) in 7 days 12-14: Run 10 km in a single activity 15-28: Take 150.

Treadmill Mile, 5K, 10K

Image
Garmin also added badges for indoor running or more exact treadmill running. You will most likely have to record activities as "Treadmill running" to be awarded with them. I haven't got any of them yet so I can't tell you all the details. There are three different distances: 1 mile, 5 km and 10 km. You must run each distance in a separate activity. Not as with the indoor cycling badges where you can take them all in one activity. Update: I've received a report from a user that running 10 km on a treadmill only awarded him with the 10k badge. It seems like you can't count the same distance for multiple badges. Sounds logical when you think about it. Maybe you can take multiple badges if you add the distances together. A good test would be to run 1 mile + 5k = 6.6 km for two badges or 16.6 km to get all three. Update 2020-05-08: I did the test this morning. I first ran 17,3 km and then saved the activity. I was only awarded with the 10k badge. I

Indoor cycling 10-mile, 20-mile and 50k

Image
For about a year ago Garmin aquired Tacx which is a well-known manufacturer of bike trainers. A bike trainer or just trainer is a device that you hook up your road bike to to do indoor cycling instead of using an exercise or spinning bike. Now during the pandemic lots of people are biking on their trainers instead of going out on the roads so this is an ideal moment to add badges for indoor cycling. You don't have to use a trainer. You can use any indoor bike that can log distance to your watch. There are three different distances: 10 miles, 20 miles and 50 km. You can take all three in one go by biking the longest distance. That is at least what I did. In January I took the Speedy Century badge (100 miles biking under 5 hours which can be done indoors like I did) and I just made a minor edit to that activity and got all badges + Speed Century and 100-Mile Ride. Update 2020-05-08: I did a test today and used one of my old 50 km bike rides, uploaded the export to my other

Deep Breathing

Image
Here is one of those more odd badges. By doing a breathwork activity you will get the Deep Breathing badge. Here is how breathwork is described by Wikipedia : "Breathwork is a New Age term for various breathing practices in which the conscious control of breathing is said to influence a person's mental, emotional or physical state, with a claimed therapeutic effect. Breathwork has no proven positive health impact other than promoting relaxation and can cause distress." In yoga and meditation breathing is often in focus and there are many breathing exercises you can find by googling breathwork meditation, yoga breathing exercises or meditation breathing exercises. There has popped up a number of videos during the Corona pandemic with breathing exercises. That might also be an idea to test and record it as breathwork. Deep Breathing 1 pt • Record 1 breathwork activity. Garmin Badge Database Garmin Connect Change country setting
