Badge Challenges, new function and the first 6 badges

Image
I wrote about my ideas for this function for a week ago and I was right. There is a new section in the challenge page for the badge challenges:  https://connect.garmin.com/modern/challenge I can see them in the Connect app under challenges but there are reports about users that don't see them there yet. Maybe the app needs an update. Use the web if you don't see them in the app. Join the challenges you would like to participate in and follow the rules. I don't see why you shouldn't join them all. "Without participation one can never hope to win." The blog post from Garmin: Link The requirements/rules for the challenges are the same as before. Below is what I wrote a week ago. June will be a busy month if you like to get all badges. June 1-30: Run 100 miles - 3.33 miles/day = 5.36 km/day 5-7: Walk 3 miles in a single activity (4.83 km) 8-14: Bike 100 km (62.1 miles) in 7 days 12-14: Run 10 km in a single activity 15-28: Take 150.000 steps in 14 days 19-21: Bike

Floor climbing

Garmin added four badges for the activity type Floor Climbing. Great that Garmin adds badges for more odd activities so we will test other activities than just ordinary running and biking. What is Floor Climbing? The "normal" term is probably Stair climbing:  https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stair_climbing Find a good flight of stairs, preferably a really long one and start climbing. There are 4 different distances or heights in this case since it is the ascent in feet that is counted. 1500, 1000, 735 and 334 feet which is 457, 305, 224 and 102 meters. If you get to the top and still haven't reached 1500 feet then just run down and repeat until you've reached the full ascent. Update 2020-05-22 In Garmin Forums it has beeen reported that you can't get multiple floor climbing badges for the same activity. You must do one activity for each badge. Virtual Climb - The Narrows 2 pts • Record a floor climbing activity with 334 feet of ascent. Vir

June 2020 Challenge Badges - New function in Garmin Connect?

Image
Challenge Badges? Is this a new function from Garmin? Yesterday Garmin published new badge data with some interesting data. The badges are not public yet so we don't now what it really means, but we can always speculate :-) Ordinary badges got two data fields: "title" and "description" These six new badges got two extra fields: "challenge rule description" and "challenge rules summary" Since the description has the text "Join" it might imply that you need to join to be a part of it. Garmin already got the Challenges function so this would fit good in there with the added fields for rules. Since it start in June we will very soon find out. The web site was growing a bit too big so it earned to get its own domain name. You can now find the page at:  https://garminbadges.com Garmin Badge Database Garmin Connect Change country setting

You can now see the related badges for a badge when you click them. I also connected several of the related badges that Garmin hasn't connected (yet): Diving, Treadmill, Indoor Cycling and maybe some more. Garmin Badge Database Garmin Connect Change country setting

Treadmill Mile, 5K, 10K

Garmin also added badges for indoor running or more exact treadmill running. You will most likely have to record activities as "Treadmill running" to be awarded with them. I haven't got any of them yet so I can't tell you all the details. There are three different distances: 1 mile, 5 km and 10 km. You must run each distance in a separate activity. Not as with the indoor cycling badges where you can take them all in one activity. Update: I've received a report from a user that running 10 km on a treadmill only awarded him with the 10k badge. It seems like you can't count the same distance for multiple badges. Sounds logical when you think about it. Maybe you can take multiple badges if you add the distances together. A good test would be to run 1 mile + 5k = 6.6 km for two badges or 16.6 km to get all three. Update 2020-05-08: I did the test this morning. I first ran 17,3 km and then saved the activity. I was only awarded with the 10k badge. I

Indoor cycling 10-mile, 20-mile and 50k

For about a year ago Garmin aquired Tacx which is a well-known manufacturer of bike trainers. A bike trainer or just trainer is a device that you hook up your road bike to to do indoor cycling instead of using an exercise or spinning bike. Now during the pandemic lots of people are biking on their trainers instead of going out on the roads so this is an ideal moment to add badges for indoor cycling. You don't have to use a trainer. You can use any indoor bike that can log distance to your watch. There are three different distances: 10 miles, 20 miles and 50 km. You can take all three in one go by biking the longest distance. That is at least what I did. In January I took the Speedy Century badge (100 miles biking under 5 hours which can be done indoors like I did) and I just made a minor edit to that activity and got all badges + Speed Century and 100-Mile Ride. Update 2020-05-08: I did a test today and used one of my old 50 km bike rides, uploaded the export to my other

Country/location requirement added

Image
Badge with country requirement: Germany You can now see the country/location requirement for all badges. There is a filter dropdown added to the main page with the countries added to the database that will display just the badges for the selected country. Note that all regional badges currently got a limited time so you might have to check the "show outdated" checkbox to see them.  If you click a badge you will see the country requirement displayed in bold text. If you got information about the country requirement for a badge then please let me know. Garmin Badge Database Garmin Connect Change country setting
