July 2021 badges - Stage 3 challenges and Hiking!
Garmin just pushed the descriptions for July challenges. Join them soon in Garmin Connect.
New in this month: Hiking! Do four hours of hiking in July.
I'm not overenthusiastic about doing yet another 20,000 feet of bike climb... I just completed the climbing for June.
Quarterly challenges - Stage 3
First month in Stage 3. We are now halfway through the year and have finished two stages. It is pretty tough to take them all. My best tip is not to fall behind in the beginning. Better to do some extra miles/kilometers the first month to be able to relax in the last.

Web site updates
- Garmin changed the naming of new badge images so they are a lot harder to find. They are now using a UUID as part of the name instead of the badgeId. That makes it also a lot harder to find the metadata since that is found through the badgeId which you only know through the metadata... Right, not easy.
Am 💕 the change of emphasis to hiking yoga weights and swim. Inspiring me to change tack. I can’t do the cycling ones as too time absorbing but with the range of activities I am looking forward to July
ReplyDeleteAs a cyclist (MTB) I am disappointed, the climbing badge and 40km again but no monthly one. I would prefer a 400km monthly as the variety in badges changes my focus. As someone who Hikes (walks in the countryside); Hiking badges would not be needed if Hiking was a subset of Walking (like MTB is to Cycling), what numbskull at Garmin thought that one up ?
ReplyDeleteHiking isn't a subset of walking (but I don't understand why…)
DeleteThat is my point.
DeleteHiking has a rating scale and can be quite technical. "Walks in the countryside" are a simple version of hiking. My hikes are far more strenuous and technical, with the use of ropes and chains a standard feature. Its almost a precursor to mountain climbing. So I am happy to see Hiking as a separate activity with separate badges. Each to their own, your Garmin, your way.
DeleteCountryside is my way of saying out of town, so I include the mountains in my hiking definitely yes. I have never had the opportunity to use ropes and chains though but it sounds very worthwhile.
DeleteHiking has different dynamic than walking. I recently recorded activity hiking 6 miles in 8 hours carrying backpack on a steep mountain trail. Walking 6 miles "in town" for me would be very relaxing 1 hour activity.
DeleteHI! I was so excited to open September challenges and see a HIKE challenge!! Yeah.....then I tried to find HIKE as an option for activities, thinking it must have been added, but cannot find one. Please help? Hiking is one of my favorite activities and I understand there are all kinds of hikes, and they are not created equal, however I would love to be able to record my "duration" - knowing the intensity minutes and calorie burn will still be captured elsewhere in the daily stats. How do I add HIKE as an activity so I can participate in this challenge. (Vivioactive 4. )THANK YOU!!

DeleteNot all watches got Hiking as an activity and activities are usually not added. You will have to log it as something else and change the type in Garmin Connect afterwards.
DeleteSeptember 31st for the stage challenges? 😁
ReplyDeleteThanks! It is now fixed :D
DeleteThe hiking one crashes the app for me, like the gains one did last time. Does anyone else get this bug?
ReplyDeleteEverything works for me. Use the web if the app isn't working.
DeleteBrilliant, thank you!
DeleteDid they change the PH Virtual ones? I just got the 30km this morning but now they revoked it. It also showed a progress bar, like the challenges, which is also gone.
ReplyDeleteI still got both badges. Are you still in Phillipines? Make sure you are in Phillipines and then make an edit to your last run. That should do it. Check the progress value.
DeleteThanks! Making an edit did the trick 😃
DeleteThe Philippines one surprised me. I switched to the Philippines today, thinking I would start grinding towards 60km by July 11th, but I just received both badges after recording a 10km run. I guess they’ve counted my previous runs in the given period.
DeleteHi Andy,
ReplyDeleteI plan an hiking activity in Jura mountains in July; does it fit to collect one of the virtual climb badges, or are these 4 badges only available after a floor climbing activity?
Thanks for all you do
They must use the floor climbing activity type so they can't be combined with the hiking challenge.
DeleteHi. I have those badges and I needed to use floor climbing as the activity.
ReplyDeleteThank you guys, i'll have to hike and to climb!
ReplyDeleteHello. What about Peachtree Road Race 2021? Is already known if it is location required badge?
ReplyDeleteIt looks like a race badge that you only can take at the correct physical location.
DeleteIt can only be verified on race day with a test.
My plan is to run 10 km on one of the race days just in case that works or if there is something I can fix afterwards.
Any results for this badge?
DeleteNothing. I haven't heard about anyone getting the badge. I did a test yesterday but no badge.
DeleteHey guys, same here, no badge. None of the 10+ runs were "rewarded".
DeleteHello,

That's standard. The weekly ones appear closer to the start dates
DeleteGarmin do a little different each month, but lately they have been holding on to the weekly and weekend ones and released them later in the month.
DeleteJust wondering if anyone here has the Legacy watches and is prepared help the others here that don’t have them get the badges for linking to an account. Maybe for a small fee?
ReplyDelete+ 1; it would be nice
DeleteHi.
ReplyDeleteDid someone recive the peachtree badge ?
hi
ReplyDeletedid anyone manage to ge the "Across The Sky" badge?
I did a test right now and got the badge. Change country to Japan and do any activity.
Deleteis this the one showing as "Tanabata Valentine‘s day"
DeleteYes. That is the badge. It isn't repeatable.
DeleteI woke up this morning to find I had reached Level 5 in my sleep. I had gone into Garmin Connect last night to add Event Type (Races) including long distance races from 2015 when I had good knees and the editing triggered badges to be awarded… anyway my point is I had always assumed that activities from before badges were introduced wouldn’t qualify, but they do. With some caveats like 10k a day streak only working from 1 April 2020.
ReplyDeleteHey guys,
ReplyDeleteDoes anybody have Toasty badge?
Garmin says - above 100° F/38° C - This is determined by the temperature coming from the local weather service nearest to the start of the activity (gps).
What does it mean "local weather service"? Does Garmin check every country for national weather station? Or they check only e.g. weather.com for the country and location.
It is not very common to have 38C in my country, usually it goes up to 35, only 1-2 days in a year can hit 37-38.
Do you have any experience which forecast app should I check?
BTW today is 36, only 2 degrees below! :D
Check the map for an activity in Garmin Connect Web. You will see the source for the weather data if you click the weather widget in the map. Google that code and you should find the weather station.
DeleteGarmin is most likely using some weather service and just inputs the start coordinates and get a response in return which is displayed in the map.
As usual, you are right :) Thanks.
DeleteIt shows degrees of Celsius and source is ICAO airport code for our international airport. I live nearby, so now it is clear it really checks our local meteo station.
It seems like I have another reason to go to Greece :D
None of my July badges are showing their images (instead of a grayed image, the hexagon is blank). I earned the July Weekend 10k Running badge today and it is also blank. (I earned the points and the empty badge shows up under the earned tab.)
ReplyDeleteI tried restarting my phone which did not fix the problem. Should I delete and reinstall the app? Anyone else having this trouble?
That is fixed in the latest version of the app. See if you got an update of the app waiting to be installed.
DeleteYes, that did the trick! Thanks for your speedy response!
